Description
Children can be demanding and this hungry roseate spoonbill chick is no exception. Its meal time, and its letting mama know!
This maternal scene was captured in May, 2021 at the Natural Swamp and Rookery portion of the St. Augustine Alligator Farm.
Roseate spoonbills are striking pink birds with an unusual flatbeak. Their color and this distinctive feature give rise to their name. They are also affectionately known as "rosies."
I first learned about these birds in fourth grade when all Florida children studied all about their state, including its flora and fauna. At that time, these birds were under some threat of extinction. Happily, they are more safely established now. However, it was years before I saw one for the first time, as I lived inland, first in Central Florida, and later in the Florida panhandle, and they are coastal birds which are most prevalent in the central and southern parts of the state.
There are actually three chicks in this treetop nest, and it wasn't long until the other two emerged to encourage, or perhaps I should say badger, their mother for food, which she dutifully shortly provided.
Yes, children, and chicks, can be demanding, but they are so cute, they somehow seem to get away with it!
