Description
The Vermilion Flycatcher is an eye-catching little bird, with his brilliant crimson red head and body.
This cute little fella was photographed at St. Marks National Wildlife Refuge, in northwest Florida, in October, 2017. He had just arrived for the winter.
This layered, textured, composite image, with a painterly look, was created using several original photographs, all captured at St. Marks national park, and a couple of textures.
These migratory birds feed on insects. They often perch somewhat conspicuously in the open, periodically leaving to catch an insect That is exactly what this pudgy little male was doing the day I photographed him. He had stationed himself on a wooden post near the marshes of the St. Marks River, and would periodically dart down to the ground briefly, always returning to his perched position.
St. Marks is a wonderful place for nature lovers. The wildlife is abundant, and there is a wide variety of birds, particularly during the colder months when many part time residents migrate to warmer locales. The preserve is also on the migratory route for monarch butterflies and other species of butterflies and moths. It is really delightful any time of year.
