Description
There are actually three babies in this nest of roseate spoonbills, but here only one has emerged to start urging mom for some food.
In the spring, there is a lot of activity and noise at the Natural Rookery at the St. Augustine Alligator Farm. This Florida tourist attraction on Anastasia Island is home to a variety of birds, as well as some of the biggest alligators I have ever seen (and I am a Florida girl who is no stranger to gators). The boardwalks through the natural preserve allow visitors to get quite close to nesting birds and their babies. Often, a tree will have many nesting birds. When I visited in early May 2021, there was nest-building taking place, and birds sitting on eggs, and nests full of young.
Roseate spoonbills are large pink coastal birds with lovely striking color and unusual flat bills. This particular adult bird has a particularly bright area of color on her wings.
This sweet maternal scene from the natural world seemed perfect for May, when we humans celebrate Mother's Day.
