Description
ANOTHER BAD FEATHER DAY is a digital photograph of a kingfisher by Carla Parris.
The belted kingfisher has a perpetual bad-feather-day look, with its distinctive shaggy crest. That look may be even more pronounced after he has been swimming.
The belted kingfisher is a lovely powdery blue-gray with a white band around the neck, a white chest, and white underparts. Males have one blue band across the breast, while the more colorful females have a blue and a chestnut brown band.
As its name suggests, the kingfisher feeds almost entirely on aquatic prey, diving to catch fish with its long, straight, dagger-like bill clearly visible in this little guy's profile.
When they are not hunting, kingfishers can be seen perched near the water on stumps, poles, markers, and utility lines.
This belted kingfisher was photographed late in the afternoon in March, 2015 at St. Marks National Wildlife Refuge in northwest Florida, south of Tallahassee.

This image won a First Place award at a March, 2016 photography exhibit at the Apalachicola Arsenal museum in northwest Florida.
