Description
This Great Blue Heron was photographed in the marshy waters of St. Marks National Wildlife Refuge, a wonderful national park in northwest Florida. This portrait of this stately bird's distinctive profile highlights this mature bird’s striking long, plume-like neck feathers.
This particular bird can be identified as an adult heron because of his shaggy neck and his white crown and face.
The Great Blue Heron is a member of the Ardeidae family, all of whose members have specialised feathers called powder down. These feathers, which are prominent in this mature bird, never moult. Instead, they fray from the end, while growing continuously from the base. The fine powder generated as the feathers fray is used by a heron to absorb and remove slime and oil from its feathers.
Great Blue Herons are the largest of coastal wading birds. These impressive birds often stand still, like statues, while wading in shallow waters, looking for prey.
