Description
Atlantic puffins are adorable seabirds which spend much of their time in the water. This little group are swimming near Eastern Egg Rock, off the coast of Maine, near Boothbay, where a nesting colony comes annually, between April and August, to breed and raise their young. It is the southernmost place where these birds can be seen.
These are Atlantic puffins - one of three species, along with tufted and horned puffins, all of which belong to a genus named after the Latin word for friars, due to their black and white bodies resembling monks' attire. Their other markings include their black crowned head, large white patches around their eyes, jet black cross shaped eyes which resemble clowns' eyes, distinctive large bright yellow and orange curved beaks, and bright yellow orange webbed feet.
