Description
Milford Sound is a fjord within Fiordland National Park in the southwest of New Zealand's South Island.
It was described by Rudyard Kipling as the eighth wonder of the world. It is part of the Te Wahipounamu World Heritage site.
Milford Sound was carved by glaciers during the ice ages.
The sound has two permanent waterfalls, and is breathtaking in any weather.
The fjord's cliffs rise vertically from dark waters, its towering mountain peaks reach to the sky, and its spectacular waterfalls cascade dramatically into the turquoise waters below.
When it rains in Milford Sound, as it often does, the year round waterfalls are intensified, numerous smaller additional temporary waterfalls appear, and a moody mist graces the entire scene.
This image was captured after heavy rains. Mist lingers on the tallest of the surrounding peaks, while waterfalls course down the rocky, verdant cliffs, splashing into the waters of the sound, where sunlight dances on the surface.

Thank you for the v & f & p, Bob and Nancy! Milford sound was stunning, and we almost didn't get there. This was the last day of our New Zealand cruise, before crossing the Tasman Sea back to Sydney, and it was rainy. It was also right after an earthquake in Chile that was causing tsunamis and closed ports on the other side of New Zealand. We missed going into other sounds, but at the very last minute the captain took us into Milford Sound. SO glad we didn't miss it! And the rain probably made it even more spectacular!
