Description
SPECTACULAR MCWAY FALLS AT JULIA PFEIFFER BURNS STATE PARK is a fine art digital photography by Carla Parris.
McWay Falls is located in Julia Pfeiffer Burns State Park on the Big Sur coast of California .
This beautiful coastal waterfall in a spectacular natural setting is one of only two tide falls in California (waterfalls which cascade directly into the Pacific Ocean).
McWay Falls drops 80 feet from tree-lined granite cliffs onto a secluded pristine white sand beach during low tide, as captured here, and directly into the turquoise blue ocean waters of McWay Cove during high tide.
The state park, located on California's spectacular U.S. Highway 1, is 37 miles south of Carmel and 12 miles south of Pfeiffer Big Sur. The scenic highway is designated by the U.S. Department of Tourism as an American National Scenic Byway and California Scenic Highway.
The 3,762-acre park offers multiple hiking trails, including Overlook Trail which is an easy ten minute walk from the parking area on a well-maintained trail, and offers the breathtaking view seen here of McWay Falls, the beach, the cove, and the ocean.
Julia Pfeiffer Burns State Park, located on land that was originally called the Saddle Rock Ranch, because of a rock formation in McWay Cove that resembles a saddle, is named after a well respected pioneer woman who was a resident and rancher in the Big Sur region during the early twentieth century. McWay Falls and Cove are named after Christopher McWay and his wife Rachel who originally settled the area in the late nineteenth century.
