Description
Her Majesty's Royal Palace and Fortress, more commonly known as the Tower of London, is a historic castle on the north bank of the River Thames in central London, England. The White Tower, which gives the entire castle its name, was built by William the Conqueror in 1078. Although it was initially a royal residence, the tower of London is best known as a prison. Many prisoners travelled to the Tower by barge, along the river, and entered by the Traitor’s Gate, pictured here. The Tower was last used as a royal residence by Anne Boleyn when she was preparing for her coronation, and three years later she was taken there as prisoner. Today the Tower of London is one of England's most popular tourist attractions.
