Description
MOZART THE EUROPEAN EAGLE OWL AT LEEDS CASTLE is a digital photograph by Carla Parris.
One of the highlights of a recent visit to Leeds Castle in England was a falconry demonstration in which I got to see this gorgeous European Eagle Owl, named Mozart, flying free.
European Eagle Owls are the largest owls in the world. These apex predators have distinctive ear tufts, piercing orange eyes, and impressive wingspans of up to six and a half feet. They are generally crepuscular hunters, hunting at twilight times of dawn or dusk. They may also be nocturnal, hunting at night.
When Mozart is not performing in a falconry demonstration, he can be seen at the castle's Birds of Prey Centre behind the maze. The center also has hawks, eagles, vultures, and falcons.
Leeds Castle is located outside London, near the town of Maidstone, in the district of Kent, which is called "the garden of England." The historic castle, which is touted as "the loveliest castle in the world," comes complete with a moat and a maze, and is located on 500 acres of beautiful grounds.
The castle dates back to the eleventh century. Henry VIII, who was an avid falconer, gave the castle to his first wife, Catherine of Aragon.
There is lots to see and do in this family friendly attraction. If you make it there, please don't forget to give my regards to Mozart!
