Description
SLIP SLIDIN' AWAY is a fine art digital photograph by Carla Parris.
This wonderful old brick red pole barn is slip sliding away. It won't be standing much longer. I have learned to photograph these beauties when you have the chance!
Red is a very popular color for barns. While it is now chosen as a matter of taste, it was initially a pragmatic choice. In earlier days, when farmers had to be resourceful in protecting their wood barns, they would seal them with linseed oil, an orange-colored oil derived from the seeds of the flax plant. They often added milk and lime, but as rust was readily available and was effective in killing fungi and mosses, they also often added ferrous oxide to the mixture. This would produce the red we have come to know and love in rural scenes.
This photograph was taken on back country roads in southern Alabama where I was glad to catch this iconic beauty still standing - if only just!
