Description
CHARMING TRULLI is a digital photograph by Carla Parris.
Alberobello, Italy is famous for its traditionally built ancient stone houses called trulli.
In 1996, the trulli were designated a UNESCO World Heritage site.
The urban trulli still extant in Alberobello today, such as those in this photograph, date from the 18th, 19th and 20th centuries. One popular theory of the origin of the design of trulli is that due to high taxation on property, the people of Puglia created dry wall constructions that could be dismantled quickly when inspectors were in the area. This is known to have occurred in 1644 to thwart tax inspectors sent by the King of Naples.
I found these unique structures whimsical and charming, and kept thinking they looked like a Mediterranean version of hobbit dwellings!
This particular photograph of trulli, which is one of a number of images of this subject available on my webisite, shows white residential trulli, adorrned with climbing red bouganvillea and accentuated with other red and white flowers, against a brilliant blue cloudless sky.
We visited Alberobello on an Adriatic cruise. It was an excursion available from the port city of Bari, Italy, fairly far south on the east coast of Italy. The town of Alberobello is about an hour and fifteen minutes inland. On the drive, we saw not only urban trulli, such as these, scattered around, mostly near Alberobello, but we also saw rural trulli, which were built for animals.
