Description
These beautiful hydrangeas are typical of landscaping throughout New England.
These particular shrubs were photographed in the garden of one of the beautiful estates on Newport, Rhode Island's famous Ocean Drive, running along a stretch of the Atlantic coast.
These are Hydrangea macrophylla, and they are probably the most prevalent variety. These are also known as mophead or bigleaf hydrangea.
Their coloring varies with the acidity of the underlying soil. Strongly acid soil with a pH below 6 yields blue flowers, while alkaline soil with a pH above 7 produces pink blooms on these French hydrangeas.
Whatever their color, hydrangeas are always a summer show-stopper with their large, colorful heads of blooms.
