Description
The Dora Canal in Central Florida connects Lake Dora and Lake Eustis. All are part of the Harris Chain of Lakes.
The early part of the canal, starting at Lake Dora, is largely residential, while the later part is a nature preserve. The entire canal is quiet and shady, under a thick canopy of overhanging trees, as seen here.
The 1.2 mile waterway, once the home of the Timucuan Indians, was previously called the Elfin River. It was dredged in the 1800’s to accommodate steamboats used in local commerce.
The Harris Chain of Lakes is a series of canals, streams, and eight connected lakes forming the Florida Ocklawaha Basin, which drains north, via the St Johns River, all the way to the Atlantic Ocean at Jacksonville.
In 1951, this beautiful, jungle-like wetland area was chosen as the location for shooting several re-takes of the film classic African Queen, which had originally been filmed in Africa.

What a wonderful peaceful shot of the Dora Canal. Beautiful reflections and framing. Love the Spanish Moss hanging from trees. I keep looking to see any Alligator or Crocodile eyes sticking up out of the water.

Thanks, Adrienne! There was a mama with babies a little further into the canal!
