Description
Hydrangeas are prevalent throughout New England, and are a near iconic aspect of the area's landscaping.
There are six varieties that thrive in the region's acidic soil, including the most common Hydrangea macrophylla (also known as mophead or bigleaf hydrangea), seen here.
The range of pinks and blues in this beautiful shrub of French hydrangeas indicates a range of acidities in the supporting soil, as strongly acid soil with a pH below 6 yields blue flowers, while alkaline soil with a pH above 7 produces pink blooms.
