Description
This closeup image features a gulf fritillary butterfly perched on a milkweed flower.
Gulf Fritillaries, along with queen and viceroy butterflies, are monarch lookalikes.
It seems all butterflies find milkweed irresistible!
This winged creature was photographed in September, 2017 at St. Marks National Wildlife Refuge, a national park south of Tallahassee and Woodville, Florida, on the Gulf of Mexico.
The preserve is a nature lover's paradise. It is a very popular birdwatching area. It is also one of the very best places for viewing monarch butterflies on their yearly migration along the Gulf coast. A monarch festival is held in the refuge in October of each year.
This image is a 5x7 closeup crop of another image available here.
