Description
This black-crowned night heron is perched on a limb over a marsh in St. Marks National Wildlife refuge in northwest Florida, near Tallahassee.
This stocky shorebird often looks like a hunchback, with its head pulled into its body. It has short legs and virtually no tail.
This portrait features a profile of a mature heron against a colorful water lily filled marsh background.
St. Marks, on the Gulf Coast of the Florida panhandle, is a birdwatcher's paradise, particularly in the winter months when a wide variety of both year-long residents and migratory birds can be seen. This night heron has many fine feathered friends in the park!
