Description
This is a closeup of a zebra longwing butterfly perched on a sprig of milkweed flowers.
These butterflies were designated the state butterfly of Florida in 1996.
This lovely butterfly, with its black and pale yellow striped wings, was photographed at St. Marks National Wildlife Refuge in September, 2017. This national park is located on the Gulf Coast of Florida, south of Tallahassee and Woodville. It is a birdwatcher's, and nature lover's paradise!
The zebra longwing is perched on a milkweed plant's white flower with yellow center. If you see these weeds, you are very likely to see any of a number of butterflies, as these plants are a favorite of many butterflies, including migratory monarchs.
This image is a 5x7 closeup crop of another image of this lovely winged creature.
