Description
The monarchs have arrived at St. Marks National Wildlife Refuge!
These beautfiul butterflies pass through the national park every year on their migratory path along the Gulf coast.
This beauty was captured the day before the preserve's annual Monarch Festival in 2017.
Monarchs have vivid colors, and very distinctive black markings which help distinguish them from their lookalikes and close cousins (the Gulf Fritillary, Viceroys, and Queens).
At the wildlife refuge, they are most frequently seen on milkweed and goldenrod in the vicinity of the St. Marks Lighthouse, on the Gulf of Mexico.
