Description
This cute little crab greeted me on a morning walk on the beach at St. George Island, Florida, in September, 2021.
It is unusual to see these little guys on seaweed. They prefer to hang out on the white sand, in holes, venturing out tentatively after peeking out and cautiously surveying their surrounding with their little eyes that they use like tiny periscopes, and ducking back into their holes when there is any activity near them. However, there was an inordinate amount of seaweed on the beach this particular morning, probably from the wind and churned up seas of recent days from hurricane and tropical depression activity in the Atlantic basin and the Gulf.
I love our Florida Gulf Coast beaches in the fall, but hurricanes are always a factor. This time, however, the tropical activity was far enough away that it mostly just kept the skies overcast which, coupled with tropical breezes, made for perfect weather for camping out on the beach, no sunscreen or umbrella needed!
I also offer a Portrait version of this image of one of my very favorite little seaside creatures!
