Description
Yellow-crowned night herons, also called American night herons or squawks, are smallish herons with stocky bodies, thick necks, short legs, large heads, orange red eyes, and thick, short bills. Adults are a purplish gray. They have a sharp black and white face pattern, a creamy yellow crown, and long yellow plumes.
These birds, which are also called “crab eaters,” stalk crustaceans in coastal marshes and shallow wetlands. They often perch at the water’s edge, in a slightly hunched position, on stumps or tree branches, as seen here.
This yellow-crowned night heron was photographed at Wakulla Springs, Florida in September, 2018, on the popular jungle boat tour offered at the Edward Ball State Park. The guide said this coastal bird was a migratory visitor from Mexico. We all said, "Hola!"

A terrific shot of one of my favorite (but ellusive) herons! Thank you for submitting this wonderful and identified bird image that is now featured on the homepage of Wild Birds Of The World - A Nature Photography Group - L/F
