Description
CALIFORNIA ROADRUNNER is a digital photograph by Carla Parris.
The greater roadrunner, pictured here, is a largely ground-dwelling bird living in the arid climate of the southwestern United States. It is slightly larger than the lesser roadrunner which lives farther south, into Central America.
Although it spends most of its time on the ground, the roadrunner is capable of limited flight. When on the ground, the roadrunner has a top speed of nearly 20 miles per hour, making it the fastest running bird capable of flight. However, its speeds are far less than that of the larger, flightless ostrich.
Unlike the cartoon character, roadrunners do not go beep beep (!), and they are more likely to be victims of, rather than victors over, coyotes.
This roadrunner was photographed at a friend's home in southern Caifornia.
