Description
This historic tree - so proclaimed by the small sign at its base - is a majestic white oak (Quercus alba). With old growth, it has graceful cascading limbs, some of which are now resting on the ground.
I believe this is the tree notably photographed in 1969 by famed photographer Alfred Eisenstaedt.
White oaks are one of six species of oaks found on Martha's Vineyard. They are the most predominant and, it seems, the most beloved. They have played an important part in the life of the island, as in the 17th and 18th centuries, white oaks were used for building ships, houses, furniture, and bridges.
White oaks have light green leaves with five to seven rounded lobes, and light gray bark. They can survive over 400 years. This one surely has some years under its belt. What a beauty it is!
