Description
Luna Moths are light chartreuse green moths with long, curving tails on their hindwings and distinctive eyespots on all four wings. They are rarely seen due to their brief (only one week long) adult lives.
These exotic large moths are now considered endangered in some areas.
The adults do not eat or have mouths. The moths emerge as adults, and exist solely to mate and reproduce. They are most commonly seen at night, and most mating occurs at night. This is the derivation of their name "luna," meaning "night" or "moon."
Males die shortly after mating and females die soon after laying eggs.
This image was captured during that brief interim period between mating and death.
This photograph is unusual as it was taken in the middle of the day. This was the 3rd of three images I took in broad sunlight. The other two photographs, taken less than 15 minutes before this image, show a pair of luna moths enjoying a little birds and the bees activity. Image captured in July, 2012, in Tallahassee, Florida.
