Description
Chappaquiddick House, pictured here, which is now part of the Harborside Inn on the Edgartown ,waterfront, was originally built by Thomas Jernegan in 1819 and housed the Home Club - a men's social club - in the early twentieth century.
Edgartown is quaint and picturesque, with historic homes dating back to the 18th and 19th centuries, when the town was the prosperous main port for whaling vessels, and wealthy whaling captains and merchants built lovely Federal and Greek Revival homes.
Edgartown dates from 1642, and is the oldest settlement on Martha's Vineyard, an affluent island off the coast of Cape Cod, Massachusetts. It is one of the the island's three main towns (along with Oak Bluffs and Vineyard Haven
In case you ever wondered, Edgartown is named for Edgar, son of James II of England, and Martha's Vineyard is named after the daughter of the English explorer who discovered the island.
This charming white house has striking black shutters and black iron railings, a commemorativve plaque with the name and date of the building, an American flag flying over the doorway, window boxes with flowers spilling over, and a border with shrubs and flowering hydrangeas, alongside a brick sidewalk.
