Description
Vernazza is one of five villages on the rugged portion of coast on the Italian Riviera known as the Cinque Terre. The coastline, the five villages, and the surrounding hillsides are a designated UNESCO World Heritage Site. This photo was taken before October, 2011, when Vernazza was struck by torrential rains, massive flooding, and mudslides that left the town buried in over 12 feet of mud and debris. Today, most shops, restaurants, and hotels are again open for business, although much recovery is still needed in outlying areas.
