Description
Mountain laurel is an evergreen shrub which grows prolifically in the north Georgia and North Carolina mountains. In the late spring and early summer, its profusion of flowers often largely obscure its waxy, dark green broad-leaved vegetation.
Mountain laurel flowers are star-shaped beauties whose fused petals have distinctive symmetrical markings (usually streaks or dots of color). The blossoms range in color from white, to pale pink, to bright pinks, to rich reds. Mountain laurel buds look like miniature mushrooms, or tiny parasols.
Mountain laurels are also called calico bush, spoonwood, ivybush, sheep laurel, and lambkill. Along with rhododendrons, azaleas, blueberries, and cranberries, mountain laurels are a member of the heather family. These woody shrubs thrive in moist, acidic soil on the floor of forests in eastern North America.
Mountain laurels have an unusual method of dispensing pollen. The filaments of their stamens grow arched and bent, resulting in the tips being caught and held in tension under the rim of the bell-shaped blooms. When an insect lands on a flower, its weight causes the stamen to spring free, flinging pollen onto the pollinating insect and beyond.
This cluster of bright peppermint pink mountain laurel buds and blooms was photographed in North Carolina in May, 2018.
