Description
England has more picturesque country cottages with thatched roofs than anywhere else in Europe. Thatching (the craft of building a roof with dry vegetation such as straw, rushes, or heather, layered to shed water away from the inner roof) began before the middle ages, and thatch was the only roofing material available to much of the population until the late 1800s. Gradually, thatch became a mark of poverty and the number of thatched properties gradually declined, as did the number of professional thatchers. Recently, however, thatch has become more popular again because of the renewed interest in preserving historic buildings and using more sustainable building materials, and is now a symbol of wealth rather than poverty. This charming English cottage's thatched roof is decorated with a thatched chickens ornaments.
