Luna Moths are light-green moths with long, curving tails on their hindwings and distinctive eyespots on all four wings. They are rarely seen due to their brief one-week adult lives. They were previously considered common, but are now considered endangered in some places. The adults do not eat or have mouths. They emerge as adults solely to mate and reproduce. They only live approximately one week, and die shortly after mating (males) or reproducing (females). They are most commonly seen at night, and most mating occurs at night. This photograph is unusual as it was taken in the middle of the day in July, 2012 in Florida.
My love of photography grew out of capturing images from my travels, so photographs of beautiful and interesting places comprise a large portion of my portfolio. I am a Southern girl, and love the beauty that is in my back yard, so there are also lots of images from close to home. These include images of our beautiful Gulf Coast beaches, which I visit any time I can! I also enjoy capturing images of interesting flora and fauna, and wildlife images I am able to capture with my newest telephoto lens! I am a painter, as well as a photographer, and offer galleries of paintings and mixed media pieces. Thanks, Bob and Nancy! Not my typical subject matter (!!), but finally decided it was just too good a photo op to pass up. It really is unusual to see these moths at all in their brief adult life, and really, really unusual to see them in broad daylight. Maybe this photo will find its way into some biology book!!
