Description
What is the first image that comes to your mind when you think of Greece? Surely the quintessential white washed buildings and blue domed churches of the Greek Islands are among those images.
This silhouette of just such a blue church dome, with its cross, and it’s picturesque bell tower were photographed on the spectacular Greek island of Santorini. But these were not photographed in the small village of Oia, which probably contains the most frequently-photographed churches, but rather on the far side of the island en route to Oia.
Santorini is one of the Cycladic Greek Islands positioned around the central island of Delos. Santorini is unique because it is the remains of a volcano from centuries ago. Its main towns are actually built on the top of the caldera, which is the outer rim of the submerged volcano which, by the way, is still active!
This particular image has a graphic quality which was not particularly by design on my part as I captured the shot, but was the result of photographing the church’s rooftop silhouette against a beautiful late afternoon sky. It is actually one of my personal favorite images from a recent (October 2023) visit to mainland Greece and several of the wonderful Greek islands which afforded a multitude of beautiful scenes!
