Description
FIRST PRESBYTERIAN CHURCH OF ST. MARYS is a digital photograph of a nineteenth century white church by Carla Parris.
This quaint and picturesque little church is the oldest Presbyterian Church building in Georgia, and the oldest building in the state which has been in continuous use as a church (in this case, since its construction was completed in 1808).
Interestingly, the church was initially non-denominational until, in 1821, a young Presbyterian missionary, Horace S. Pratt, came to St. Marys from New Jersey, and the church was formed with a group of 29 people in 1822.
St. Marys is a small town on the coast of south Georgia. With a ferry service offered from its small harbor, it is the exclusive gateway to secluded Cumberland Island National Seashore, the largest of the Georgia's barrier islands, called the Golden Isles.
