Description
A belted kingfisher is perched on a high branch of a tree in the St. Marks National Wildlife Refuge in northwest Florida.
He is positioned in profile, silhouetted against a cloudless blue sky. His distinctive markings around his neck are highlighted here. He appears to have been fishing, as his feathers are slicked back on his head. His long, slender beak, which he uses for fishing, is also clearly visible.
This national park on the coast of the Gulf of Mexico has marshes where this fishing bird likes to hang out. His favorite perch is posts at the water's edge and water markers in the water, where he is very close to his swimming prey, but he periodically assumes a lookout post on the top of vegetation and trees.
