TOM THE TURKEY is a digital photograph by Carla Parris.

This Florida wild turkey looks like the perfect Thanksgiving turkey. However, he is safe, as he currently resides at the Tallahassee Museum (formerly the Tallahassee Junior Museum), where he delights visitors throughout the year.

This image features this male turkey, called a gobbler, strutting through the woods with his brown patterned tail feathers spread in an arch and his heavily patterned black and white side feathers lightly brushing the ground .

This gobbler has a red and blue colored head, a long beard hanging below his iridescently colored chest, and a red wattle (called a snood) draped off of his beak.

Although the turkey is a large bird, it is able to fly, and likes to roost at night in treetops.

The turkey is native to North America, and Benjamin Franklin would have preferred the turkey to the American bald eagle as the symbol of the United States.

My love of photography grew out of capturing images from my travels, so photographs of beautiful and interesting places comprise a large portion of my portfolio. I am a Southern girl, and love the beauty that is in my back yard, so there are also lots of images from close to home. These include images of our beautiful Gulf Coast beaches, which I visit any time I can! I also enjoy capturing images of interesting flora and fauna, and wildlife images I am able to capture with my newest telephoto lens! I am a painter, as well as a photographer, and offer galleries of paintings and mixed media pieces.
