Description
Ospreys frequent the marshes along Lighthouse Road in St. Marks National Wildlife Refuge in northwest Florida, outside Tallahassee, on the Gulf coast.
This osprey is perched atop a tall white weathered wood pole. You can see how his talons are clutching tightly to the top of his wooden pedestal. At other times, this predatory shore bird uses his talons for capturing prey, which most often consists of fish.
This statuesque fella almost seems to be posing for the camera as he presents his dignified profile.
There are several osprey nests within the preserve which are visible from the road to the St. Marks lighthouse. They are positioned high atop trees in this national park which is a nature lover's paradise, and a birdwatcher's dream.
While there are many migratory birds which pass through the park or spend their winter there, the ospreys are welcome year-round residents.
