Description
SPRINGTIME IN CHARLESTON'S FRENCH QUARTER is a painterly style digital photograph by Carla Parris.
The French Quarter of Charleston is a portion of the city's downtown area, the bulk of which is located within the borders of the original walled colonial city. It is bordered by Market Street, Broad Street, Meeting Street, and the Cooper River.
The area began being called the French Quarter in 1973 when efforts began for preserving warehouse buildings on the Lodge Alley block. The name was derived from the high concentration of French merchants in the region's history.
The area, which is home to the Market Hall, art galleries, retail establishments, restaurants, and many historic homes, was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1973.
This digital painting is based on an original photograph. It features a textured peach building which is plaster covered brick; an arched alcove with a planter on the sidewalk on the left and a lit gas lamp on the wall on the right; and a doorway. Small shade trees grace the scene with bright green spring vegetation. The walls of the building, and the pavement below, are lit with dappled sunlight and patterned with lovely shadows.
The palette of this piece is springtime colors of peach, aqua, teal, chartreuse, and spring green, with accent touches of dark brown and black.
