Description

South Sawyer Glacier is one of two beautiful glaciers in Tracy Arm fjord which is located near Juneau and within the Tongass National Forest that covers much of the vast expanse of Alaska.

Tracy Arm is a long, narrow fjord that gently winds its way through jaw-dropping scenery. There are steep granite cliffs; mountains with lush forest vegetation,often growing on impossibly sparse soil; and numerous tidewater waterfalls meandering down mountain and cliff sides before cascading into the water. There are also distant snow-capped mountains adding to the dramatic beauty of the landscape.

Negotiating passage through the fjord to the glaciers can be a challenge, with more and more icebergs from glacial calving as you get closer to the twin glaciers. The icebergs can be massive and dangerous, as well as numerous, and can render the fjord impassable and the glaciers completely hidden from view.

The density of glaciers, as well as the depth of this particular glacier, contribute to the deep blues of the ice. The floating icebergs near the glacier and in the flow from the glacier into the fjord range from glass-like shades of pastel blue and green, to beautiful deep blues.

Near the glaciers, the water is fresh and clear, and in beautiful shades of blue and green, and the air is refreshingly crisp, clean, and cool. It is peaceful and serene except when the glaciers calve, when there is a startling crack and thunderous rumbling, culminating in chunks of ice falling into the water, sending up sprays of ice and water. Perhaps the best succinct description of the glaciers is stunningly majestic.
