Description
South Sawyer Glacier is a magnificent glacier in Tracy Arm fjord near Juneau, Alaska. Tracy Arm is one of two fjords (the other is Endicott Arm) within the Tracy Arm-Fords Terror Wilderness, within the Tongass National Forest that covers much of Alaska. Both fjords are over 30 miles in length, and ice covers a significant portion of each.
The approach to South Sawyer Glacier is through a long, deep, gently winding, narrow fjord edged with steep granite rock faces, mountains with lush forest vegetation, numerous tidewater waterfalls, alpine-like valleys, and distant snow-capped mountains. The approach is spectacular, with more and more icebergs, from glacial calving, as you penetrate deeper and further into the fjord. At times the icebergs, some of which can be large, can be numerous and can render the fjord impassable and the glacier completely hidden from view. The icebergs are in beautiful palette of glass-like shades of blue and green, and as you near the glacier, with its beautiful deep blues, the water is fresh and clear, and the air is crisp, clean, and cool. It is serene, majestic, awe-inspiring, and humbling.
