Description
PICTURESQUE OLD TOWN IN VIGO SPAIN is a digital photograph by Carla Parris.
Vigo is a port city on the Atlantic coast of Spain in the Galician province of Pontevedra. Its urban area is built over fortified Castro hill and an ancient Roman settlement.
Although present-day Vigo is largely a modern city, thankfully much of its quaint medieval Old Town has been preserved.
On slopes above the marina, there are cozy neighborhoods with picturesque cobblestone streets, many of which radiate from the neoclassical Iglesia Concatedral de Santa Maria (seen on the far left of this image) at its center. As pictured here, there are also narrow alleys and steep steps connecting streets and leading down to the marina.
In addition to many of its original buildings, the charming Old Town still has four of its original squares (the Plaza de Pedra; the Plaza Almeida, the Plaza Princesa; and the Plaza Constitucion).
Because of the Vigo's humble origins as a fishing village, much of the historic quarter retains a strong maritime flavor.
