Description
A pair of glossy ibises is feeding in the shallow waters of St. Marks National Wildlife Refuge in northwest Florida.
Throughout the course of the year, this national park provides habitat for more than 250 species of birds. Although the refuge is located between the Atlantic and Mississippi Flyways, it is used by a variety of migratory bird for breeding, overwintering, and stopover.
The glossy ibis is a small ibis which looks very dark from a distance, but in fact has a brown body, chestnut reddish-brown neck, and multicolored (green, purple, and bronze) metallic iridescent feathers on its wings.
Like the white ibis, the glossy ibis has a distinctive long, slender, downward-curved bill which gives rise to its Latin name which means “scythe” or “sickle.”
This wading bird is sometimes called a black curlew or brown ibis.
