Description
PAIR OF AMERICAN BALD EAGLES IN TREETOP NEST is a digital photograph Carla Parris.
This pair of American Bald eagles perched in their nest high up in the top of a pine tree, was photographed in St. Marks Wildlife Refuge in December, 2014.
This preserve in northwest Florida, south of Tallahassee on the Gulf coast, is a delight to all nature lovers, but particularly to birdwatchers.
This treetop nest is on the right side of the drive through the preserve towards the lighthouse.
American bald eagles are the national symbol of the United States.
They were once an endangered species, with fewer than 500 breeding pairs, but in 2007 were removed from endangered status after successful breed preservation efforts. There are now 10,000 breeding pairs in the lower 48 states.
One of the striking, recognizable features of bald eagles is their white head. The common name of "bald eagles" is derived from the scientific name for the species, which includes a word which means "white." The word "bald" previously meant "white," rather than its current meaning of "hairless."
Bald eagles, which can live as long as 30 years, pair for life. The male and female share the 38-week incubation duties which the eggs require.
