Description
On a clear day, towering snow-capped Mount Rainier dominates the horizon to the southeast of Seattle, Washington.
“The Mountain,” as it is sometimes referred to by locals, is also known as “Tahoma” or “Tacoma.” It is part of the Cascade mountain range of the U.S. Pacific Northwest. It is topped by Columbia Crest, Point Success, and Liberty Cap. When it is visible, the locals like to say it is “out.”
Mount Rainier is the most heavily glaciated mountain in the lower 48 states, with 26 major glaciers and extensive permanent snowfields and glaciers. The summit is topped by two volcanic craters and it is an active stratovolcano. Because of the massive amounts of glacial ice, it has the potential to produce lahars (violent types of mudflow or debris flow), and is considered very dangerous.
The glaciers are the source of numerous rivers, including the White, Carbon, Puyallup, Mowich, Nisqually, and Cowlitz Rivers
.
Washington and the Pacific Northwest boast a number of impressive peaks, including Mount St. Helens, Mt. Olympus, and Mt. Hood. And nearby Alaska offers Mount Denali (the former Mt. McKinley). Certainly iconic Mount Rainier, a national park and North America’s most accessible glaciated peak, is on any Washington visitor’s must-see and must-visit list. You just need a clear day… !
