Description
NOTRE DAME DE PARIS GOTHIC CATHEDRAL is a digital photograph by Carla Parris.
Notre Dame de Paris, which means Our Lady of Paris, is among the famous landmarks of the beautiful city of Paris. This Gothic cathedral, constructed between 1164 and 1345, is situated at the historical center of the city on the Ile de la Cite, where there had previously been first a Roman temple to Jupiter, then a Christian basilica, and then a Romanesque church.
This side view of the cathedral, photographed from across the Seine river, shows the delicate arched exterior supports, called flying buttresses, which are a hallmark of soaring Gothic architecture. The cathedral also has outstanding large rose windows, like the one seen here, and gargoyles, serving as waterspouts, which are also notable Gothic features.
The impressive structure has figured significantly in the history of France. For example, Crusaders prayed here before embarking on their holy wars, and years later, it was here that Napoleon crowned himself emperor.
Victor Hugo's novel, The Hunchback of Notre Dame, published in 1831, popularized the cathedral and drew public attention to the structures then-dilapidated condition. A restoration project began in 1845.
Interestingly, the cathedral, at kilometer zero, is the reference point for distances on Frances highway.
The exterior of the cathedral can be viewed on foot and from the Seine on the popular tourist boats called bateaux mouches. The interior can be visited on guided tours.
