Description
These Hot Papaya Coneflowers were photographed at the Coastal Maine Botanical Gardens near Boothbay Harbor, Maine,on what was, appropriately, a very hot summer afternoon in August, 2018.
These red hot beauties are striking, and have an altogether different look and feel to the purplish pink-petaled single echinacea with which I am familiar, which are the most prevalent in the south.
The Hot Papaya Echinacea are tall, eye-catching double coneflowers with large, showy, very fragrant, fiery red-orange flowers and a pom-pom densely-petaled central cone. The ray flowers drape, or droop, down from the cone which is very prominent on this variety.
Like its more humble cousins, the Hot Papaya Echinacea hybrid perennial is drought resistant, hardy once established, sel- seeds, and as one source says, "thrives on neglect." For that reason alone, this show-stopper is my kind of plant!
