Description
Herculaneum is an ancient Roman town which was destroyed by pyroclastic flows in the same 79 A.D. eruption of Mount Vesuvius which also destroyed Pompeii. A pyroclastic flow is a ground-hugging avalanche of hot ash, pumice, rock fragments, and volcanic gas that rushes down the side of a volcano, with temperatures sufficient to carbonize wood. Herculaneum's ruins are actually better preserved than those of Pompeii because much of its timber has survived in a charred condition, giving a better idea of what the town looked like. Herculaneum is a popular tourist destination for visitors to the Bay of Naples in Italy.
