Description
GREAT WHITE EGRET IN GRASSY MARSHES is a digital photograph by Carla Parris.
Great White Egrets are impressive, bright white birds. Their name, which comes from the French word "aigrette," meaning "silver heron" and "brush," was inspired by the long, delicate, filament-like plumes which adorn them during the breeding season.
Because these feathers, like those on the Snow White Egret, were once popular in the fashion industry, fetching exorbitant prices, the species was previously threatened, as were the other egrets. However, they both are now prevalent, particularly in wildlife preserves like St. Marks National Wildlife Refuge, on the Gulf Coast of northwest Florida, south of Tallahassee, where this photograph was taken in January, 2016.
This 68,000 acre refuge, which is one of the oldest in the National Wildlife Refuge System, was established in 1931 to provide winter habitat for migratory birds. It is also the permanent home for many types of birds. With its combination of freshwater, brackish water, saltwater, tidal creeks, ponds, coastal marshes, and estuaries, it is home to a rich diversity not only of birds, but of other animals, and plants.
