Description
Upside-down trees overflowing with flowering plants are prevalent throughout Glacier Gardens in Juneau, Alaska.
This lovely walkway in the lower part of the gardens is lined with lush ferns and purple rhododendrons.
There is a tram which takes visitors to the upper parts of the hillside gardens.
This unique garden was the result of a happy accident. After damaging expensive clearing equipment by inadvertently backing it into the side of a mountain, a frustrated excavator dropped a large uprooted tree into the ground, upside-down. Eventually, the idea developed of strategically positioning other uprooted trees throughout a hillside area in the Tongass National Rainforest and planting their exposed roots with ferns, vines, and flowering plants.
These out of the ordinary gardens, with their natural flower boxes, are now one of Juneau's most popular tourist destinations.
