Description
FRAMED PELICAN is a digital photograph, with a blue border, by Carla Parris.
Pelicans are large water birds with distinctive long bills which have a curved hook at the end of the upper mandible, and a large gular pouch attached to the lower mandible.
Their bills can hold nearly three gallons of fish and water, which is more than three times what their stomachs can hold! They feed by gulping water, straining out the liquid, and eating the remaining fish and squid.
Pelicans have long necks, short stout legs, and large, fully webbed feet. I think they are rather comical looking on land.
However, pelicans also have long and broad wings shaped for powerful soaring and graceful gliding flight. In addition to flying in V formation, these gregarious birds also often fly and glide in lines close to the water's surface employing something called the "ground effect" which makes flying almost effortless.
There is also a borderless version of this image entitled "Friendly Pelican."
