Description
FLOATING LEAVES AND FERN FRONDS is a watercolor painting by Carla Parris of vegetation on a woodland stream. This image of a scene from the forest floor has been edited and enhanced digitally.
This painting began with applying watercolor paint to wet watercolor paper, and then pressing first leaves and fern fronds, and then crumpled saran wrap, into the wet paint and allowing it to dry. These items were then removed, yielding an image with lovely textures and a spontaneous, semi-abstract, impressionistic look and feel.
With this technique, the top layers appear to be deepest layers in the final image. That is, the saran wrap, which yielded the lovely organic rock shapes which appear to be beneath the floating vegetation, was the last layer pressed into the paint.
The palette of this painting, which has something of the look of stained glass, is complementary colors of turquoise and rust, with touches of lemon yellow, chartreuse, burnt sienna, umber, olive green, aqua, and teal.
