Description
These cute little crabs love to hide in holes on the beach, near the water's edge. They use their eyes like little periscopes, checking out their surroundings before venturing out.
This little fella, however, was nestled among some seaweed that was littering the Florida Gulf coast much more than usual in September, 2021, presumably because of the churned up seas from a host of tropical depressions in the Atlantic basin.
I was delighted to find him on a morning walk along the beach, and glad he was hanging out in surroundings more colorful his typical white sand environs, where he would be almost camouflaged, except for those distinctive little black eyes.
Photographed at St. George Island, one of the beautiful barrier islands south and west of Tallahassee, Florida, near Eastpoint, Carrabelle, and Apalachicola.
The Portrait Orientation version of this image captures how I saw him, on a piece of seaweed perpendicular to tha water's edge. I also offer a Landscape Orientation version of this photograph.
