CHRISTMAS COLORS AT ST. MARKS WILDLIFE REFUGE is a digital photograph by Carla Parris.
St. Marks National Wildlife Refuge, located south of Tallahassee on the Florida Gulf Coast, is a protected area of over 70,000 acres with 43 miles of shoreline spanning three Florida panhandle counties (Wakulla, Jefferson, and Taylor).
The refuge, which is a nature lover's, and birdwatcher's, paradise, has a wonderful diversity of ecosystems. These include forests, swamps, fresh and brackish water marshes, and a salt water estuary on Apalachee Bay. The latter of these, fed by the St. Marks River, has beaches, tidal creeks, and small islands, edged with oak and palm hammocks and coastal pine forests.
This image of what I believe is a cedar tree was captured in November, 2015, in the coastal area near the historic St. Marks Lighthouse. The area had palms, palmettos, and, surprising to me, even a prickly pear.
The bright greens of this branch and the darker greens of surrounding foliage, coupled with the bright red of the oval shaped berries, were reminiscent of festive Christmas colors!
